AnAlphabet William Nicholson

£995.00

A good clean copy of Nicholson’s illustrated alphabet, with twenty six woodblock prints each with a different character representing a letter of the alphabet.

The letter A for Artist is interestingly William Nicholson himself and B for Beggar is the face of his brother.

Each of the woodblock is in excellent condition, with strong solid colours and could therefore be framed up separately if required.

The book’s inner and outer spine are fine, corners only slightly bumped, there is some offsetting from the plates but this has transferred to the opposite page that is blank.

This is popular  second edition from 1898.

A quote from St. James’s Gazette – “You must turn to your best specimens of Japanese colour-printing to get anything better than these boldly-constructed black and reds”

The Art Journal stated “Mr. Nicholson has found a path for himself, and he reigns there without rival”

Measurements ;  Book=  High 31.5 cm   Wide 25.5 cm             Wood Blocks  High  24.5 cm     Wide  19 cm

We are also selling a copy of Nicholson’s Almanac of Twelve Sports.
