A very rare ‘Abingwood’ elbow chair, designed by George Walton in 1897 and used at the John Rowntree café and the Billiard rooms in Buchanan Street Glasgow.
George Walton 1867-1933 was a British Architect who studied at the Glasgow school of Art and then later set up in business as ‘George Walton and Co. Ecclesiastical and House Decorators’
He exhibited at the Arts and Craft Society exhibition in London 1890, later moving to London in 1897 designing a number of shop fronts e.g. for the Kodak shop, where the chair was used and also at he the famous Mrs Cranston Tea rooms in Glasgow.
He also designed for Liberty and the high Wycombe furniture manufacturers.
This chair is a very good example the rush seat has been replaced to a good standard, it has one very old repair to the back and a chip to the arm {see photos}
